Ahmedabad is a vibrant city which is full of sightseeing and tourist wonders that one should not miss on their Ahmedabad tour. Apart from various parks, gardens, and shopping places, the city has some magnificent temples and ashrams. These are not just frequented by devotees from all over the country but by tourists who wish to see some architectural delights and are looking for a place that reflects serenity.

There are several ashrams in Ahmedabad like the Sabarmati Ashram which is well known all over the world but then there are other ashrams here which are equally magnificent and are the lesser-known gems of the city. Amar Dham is one such place that must be visited if you wish to relax and calm your senses, away from the hustle and bustle of the city life and its cacophony.

History of Amar Dham

Amar Dham was built by Yogi Lalbapa in the year 1972. He was a wandering yogi till he came to Hathijan which is where Amar Dham is and rested for a while under a tree. That is when he was inspired to stay here for a while. The Thakor community of Hathjian requested Lalbapa to make the place his permanent abode and that is how the ashram Amar Dham came into being.

The ashram has several parts to it such as Guru Gadi, Bhojanalay, Naklank Darbar, Guest House, Gaushala, Gebi Satsang Hall, Lalbapa Samadhi Sthal and several smaller temples in the premises. This ashram is based on the fundamental principle of ‘Satya Sanatan Dharma’ which was given by Ramdevji Bhagwan. Devotees believe that he was an incarnation of Lord Krishna.

The underlying tenet of this principle is that we must not differentiate between people based on their religion and caste. This principle takes into its fold people from sects, cultures, religions, and castes, without expecting them to give up their faith. It is the reason why anyone can visit this ashram, participate in the activities and have the Mahaprasad (blessed food) of Harihar. The ashram has a motto ‘Seva, Bhakti, Sadavrat’, which means service, and faith, always and forever.

Inside the ashram

The ashram has several temples with deities of several gods and goddesses like Lord Ganesha, Lord Hanuman, Lord Krishna, and Radha to name a few. There are several domes with beautiful carvings and multicolored flags atop the domes. The temples are all in a line in the courtyard of the ashram. There is also an idol of Lalbapa in white in one of these temples. Outside these temples, there is a statue of a horse that serves as a good spot to take some pictures.
