One of the holiest and sacred Hanuman temples in India is Kashtabhanjan Hanuman Mandir. It is considered to be one of the most important among the Swaminarayan Sampraday. The idol of Lord Hanuman in this temple was established by Sadhguru Gopalanand Swami on Ashwini Vadi Pancham Savant in 1905 (according to the Hindu calendar).

The temple’s image is considered to be really powerful. It is believed that the vile spirits leave the possessed by just one look at it. The temple is humungous and really spacious. The idol of Lord Hanuman seems mesmerizing. However, sometimes there are long queues at the gates of the temples, especially on Saturdays.

If one ever visits the temple then they must not forget to get a hold of the holy water that is fetched from the auspicious well. There are several counters in the temples where one can offer their donations and receive a receipt for the same.

The devotees are also offered Sukhdis which is a kind of sweet in Gujarat as Prasad. At the temple’s dining room, food is served on a daily basis for free. Anyone can avail this facility in this temple. This great initiative is sponsored by Swami Narayan temple which is situated in the premises and the temple’s trust.

The dining room of the temple feeds at least 5,000 people daily and the number of people doubles on Saturdays. Hanuman Chalisa booklets are available in various forms and sizes at the premises for little money.

Near the temple gate, there is a Dharamshala which provides accommodation facilities to people who want to stay overnight. Buses are very frequent around this area.

Architecture of Kashtabhanjan Hanuman Mandir

The image of Lord Hanuman in this temple is of the stout stature. His face has a handlebar moustache. The idol is shown crushing a demon beneath his feet. The teeth are shown outwards. The idol of Lord Hanuman is shown standing amidst full foliage of fruit bearing monkey attendants.

The temple is a three storey building with slanting roofs and is coloured in light shades. This makes the temple very aesthetically appealing. There is Swami Narayan temple which is also situated in the main temple premises. There are several small counters where donations can be offered to Lord Hanuman which goes to the temple’s trust.

The temple premises are very clean and there are many dustbins in the premises so the people are advised to keep the premises clean. There is a Dharamshala located outside the gate where people can stay overnight if they wish to do so.

History of Kashtabhanjan Hanuman Mandir

There is a long history behind this temple. This temple shows Lord Hanuman as Kashtbhanjan as he is believed to crush the sorrows of all the people. The devotees wait in long queues for their chance to worship his idol and be cured of all their illnesses. This temple is the only Swaminarayan temple where the temple is devoted to Lord Hanuman solely.

According to Raymond Williams, the renowned author, the local people believe that the idol of Lord Hanuman came alive when Sadhguru Gopalanand Swami established the idol of Lord Hanuman and touched the idol with a rod. On the basis of this story, the ritual of healing is performed at this temple.

It is believed that the evil spirits possessing any person’s body will leave the body by just a mere look at the idol of Lord Hanuman. Saturdays are considered to be the ideal day to visit the temple as it is a day devoted to Lord Hanuman, according to the Hindu mythology. A special ritual for people affected by mental illness is also performed on this very day.

Shastri Yagnapurushdas appointed Vadtal’s Kothari Gordhandas to look after all the affairs concerning the temple in 1899. At the time of his tenure as the head of the temple, he managed to renovate the temple, helped to construct the neighbouring building which now works as the Dharamshala and he also got hold of more land that would be used for the temple premises to bring the temple to its current glory.

As the temple is considered to be a powerful temple that drives out evil spirits out of one’s body, anyone suffering from mental illness are brought here on Saturdays, the day devoted to Lord Hanuman. Those people are touched by a rod which is believed to be used by Sadhguru Gopalanand during the establishment of the idol.

The rod is covered with silver metal for decoration. The administration department at the temple has hired a Brahmin household to perform this ritual as a priest at the temple.
